Canva Craft: Canva's first own image model

Canva released Canva Craft, its first image model, on the 22nd of October 2026, the company said in its newsroom. An image model is a program that draws a picture from words you type.

Craft is open to all Canva users worldwide from that day, Canva said. Developers can also use it through Canva's API, a door that lets other apps use it.

Canva Craft plans the picture first, then draws it

Craft works in two steps, Canva wrote. First it writes a plan: what goes where, how big, and which words appear.

Then a second model draws the picture from that plan. This helps it put clear text and objects in the right place, Canva said.

Canva taught it with millions of designs made by people

Craft learned from millions of Canva templates, such as posters, menus and slides, Canva wrote. Canva designers judged more than 25,000 pairs of pictures against other models.

Canva Research, its own AI lab, built Craft from scratch, the company said. Researchers from Leonardo.Ai, which Canva bought in July 2024, helped, Canva told TechCrunch.

Craft makes pictures up to 2K, about 2,000 dots across, in more than 30 shapes, Canva said. It can write words inside a picture in 55 languages.

On DesignArena, Craft started as the 4th best image model, Canva said. It ranked 1st of 87 models for pictures of people, the company wrote.

How to try it, and what it costs

In Canva, open Dream Lab in the bottom left panel, the company said. Each picture uses your Canva AI credits, Canva's developer forum says, and Canva published no price per picture.

Two faster versions, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, are coming, Canva said. Canva did not give a date.
