OpenAI's ChatGPT and CodexOpenAI's ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage limit from December on the Plus, Pro and Business plans, OpenAI's help page says. OpenAI updated the page on the 31st of October 2026.
Codex is OpenAI's AI helper for writing computer code. ChatGPT is its chat app.
Use counted in tokens
Use will be counted in tokens, OpenAI said. Tokens are small pieces of text that an AI model reads and writes.
Advanced models and hard tasks will use up more of the allowance, OpenAI said. Quick chats in Instant mode will not count.
What OpenAI promises
OpenAI said it expects most users will not have to wait for resets more often than now. Users will see their remaining use and reset times in Settings.
Users who hit the limit can wait, upgrade or buy credits, OpenAI said.
OpenAI said the change comes as it brings the agent tools of its Work product into ChatGPT. Agents are AI tools that carry out tasks on their own.
Below we break down the plans
The change covers 3 paid plans, and each plan has 2 products. That turns 6 separate allowances into 3 shared ones, by our arithmetic.

What is confirmed and what is not
OpenAI's help page confirms the shared limit and the December start. It does not give token numbers for each plan.
Posts on the social network X also mention new device limits and a joined Chat and Work screen. OpenAI has not confirmed those.
