OpenAI's ChatGPT paid plansOpenAI now limits how many paid ChatGPT accounts can be used on one device, its help page says. The Decoder reported the change on the 1st of November 2026.
People who go over the limit see a message that says Device limit reached. That paid account then cannot be used on that device.
Who it hits
The device limit covers 5 paid plans, the page says: Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. Free accounts and work plans for business and schools do not count.
Some people buy several paid accounts to get more use of Codex, OpenAI's coding helper, newruntime reported.
Cards have a limit too
ChatGPT may also refuse a new paid plan if too many are tied to one payment card, OpenAI said. This can happen even when family members each use their own device.
The warning can come later, OpenAI said. An account that first worked may be signed out after a check.
What users can do
Users can sign in to another account they own or cancel and ask for a refund, the page says. Buying extra credits does not clear the limit.
OpenAI calls the limits part of its privacy and security protections.
Below we break down the plans
5 paid plans count toward the limit and 4 kinds of plan do not, by our count. OpenAI does not say how many accounts one device may hold.
