Anthropic's Claude Code rulesAnthropic added two sentences to Claude Code's instructions so it will not rebuild an existing video game, the company confirmed. Engadget reported the change on the 1st of November 2026.
Claude Code is Anthropic's AI helper that writes software for people. The new rule applies when it runs on the Claude Opus 5.5 model.
What the rule says
Claude Code should build original games, games in a genre and games from the user's own designs, the rule says. It should not build a copy of a specific existing game, even if renamed.
An X user called Chasm spotted the rule, which was pushed around the 27th of October, Game Developer reported. There is no setting to turn it off, Chasm said.
Why Anthropic did it
Addy Osmani, who works at Anthropic, wrote that using Claude to break copyright is against its rules. An Anthropic spokesperson pointed Game Developer to his post.
Osmani said original games should keep working and that Anthropic will keep adjusting the rule. He asked people to send him cases where their own work was refused.
A wave of copied games
Fans have used AI to rebuild big games such as Halo and Grand Theft Auto V to play in a web browser, Engadget said.
One developer who makes licensed board game versions said on GitHub that the rule blocked paid work, DigitBin reported.
Below we break down the rule
The rule names 3 kinds of games that are still allowed. It names 1 kind that is blocked, by our count.

What is confirmed and what is not
Anthropic confirmed the change through Osmani's post. It is unclear how Claude decides whether a user owns a game idea, Game Developer said.
