Democrats tell Trump to keep his Grok chats

Two top House Democrats wrote to President Trump on the 28th of October 2026 to keep all White House prompts to AI chatbots. They asked for a closed briefing by the 11th of November.

Congress letter on SpaceXAI's Grok

Two top House Democrats told President Donald Trump to keep every question he and his staff type into AI chatbots.

Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia signed the letter on the 28th of October 2026. They lead the Democrats on the Judiciary and Oversight panels.

The letter names SpaceXAI's Grok, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini and the Perplexity app. It says the prompts and the AI answers belong to the United States.

The letter follows reports that Trump asked Grok about Venezuela

The letter cites TechCrunch and Time reports of the 1st of October 2026. They said Trump spent hours asking Grok questions in a meeting with Elon Musk in December 2025.

One question was how Venezuelans would react to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, the reports said. A few weeks later Trump ordered the military to capture Maduro, the letter says.

The legal basis: the Presidential Records Act of 1978

That law says records of a president's official work belong to the public. AI prompts and outputs "plainly fall within the definition of presidential records," the two Democrats wrote.

The Oversight Democrats put the letter online on the 29th of October. "The White House preserves all required records in accordance with the law," a White House official told Nextgov the same day.

Below we break down the 10 topics for a closed briefing by the 11th of November

The letter asks for a private briefing by 5 p.m. on the 11th of November 2026. That is 14 days after the letter, by our arithmetic.

The White House should explain its rules for keeping AI prompts and its deals with chatbot firms. It should also say if those deals let models learn from staff prompts.

Other topics are Trump's own chatbot use and the email addresses he uses for it. The letter also asks about security, staff training and who outside the government can see the prompts.
