Meta's AI bill: $825 billion, shares fall 7%

Meta reported 64.6 billion dollars of sales on the 21st of October 2026 and spent about 380 million dollars a day on buildings and chips. Its filing a day later added up to about 825 billion dollars of future deals, and its shares fell 7%.

Meta's AI bill: 825 billion dollars

Meta owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. It owes about 825 billion dollars in future deals, Bloomberg reported on the 22nd of October 2026.

Most of it is for AI, the tools that answer questions and write, Bloomberg wrote. The bill shapes the free apps that 3.64 billion people use each day.

Meta's shares fell 7% that day, Yahoo Finance price data shows.

Meta took in 64.6 billion dollars from July to September

Meta's sales grew 26% to 64.6 billion dollars in those months, its report of the 21st of October says. Profit from its main work fell 37% to 12.99 billion dollars.

A 9.89 billion dollar legal bill pulled profit down, the report says. It pays for a deal with 52 US states and territories over harm to teens.

Below we break down what Meta spends on AI each day

Meta spent 34.91 billion dollars on buildings, chips and machines in those months, its report says. Business people call this capex, short for capital spending.

That is about 380 million dollars a day, by our arithmetic. It is 54 cents of every dollar Meta took in.

A year before, it spent 19.37 billion. For all of 2026, Meta plans 135 to 145 billion dollars.

Meta's spending on buildings and chips: 19.37 billion dollars from July to September 2025, 34.91 billion dollars from July to September 2026, about 380 million dollars a day, 135 to 145 billion dollars planned for 2026, and about 825 billion dollars promised up to 2036Meta's spending on buildings and chips: 19.37 billion dollars from July to September 2025, 34.91 billion dollars from July to September 2026, about 380 million dollars a day, 135 to 145 billion dollars planned for 2026, and about 825 billion dollars promised up to 2036

The 825 billion dollars: rent for data centers and rented computers

Meta's filing of the 22nd of October lists 355.73 billion dollars of rent for data centers, up to 2036. Data centers are big buildings full of chips.

It lists 454.52 billion dollars of deals Meta cannot cancel, mostly to rent time on chips, plus up to 14.72 billion dollars more.

What is confirmed and what is not

The filing gives no total. Its three parts add up to 825 billion dollars, by our arithmetic.

In July, Bloomberg reported almost 700 billion dollars.

Mark Zuckerberg: Meta's AI helper Muse costs a lot to run

Meta's AI helper Muse "is very compute intensive to run," boss Mark Zuckerberg said on a call on the 21st of October. That means it needs a lot of chips.

Meta aims to make it more than 10 times cheaper to run in a year, he said. Finance chief Susan Li said Meta will "continue investing aggressively".
