OpenAI plans Washington push from 9 November
OpenAI will start a policy campaign in Washington when Congress returns on the 9th of November, Axios reported. It will ask for speed limits on the strongest AI and call its data centres AI compute campuses.

OpenAI's plan for WashingtonOpenAI will start a policy campaign in Washington right after the US midterm vote, Axios reported on the 1st of November 2026. It begins when Congress returns on the 9th of November.
Chris Lehane, OpenAI's chief of global affairs, told Axios the vote on the 3rd of November marks a new era.
Speed limits for strong AI
OpenAI plans to call for required safety limits on the most powerful AI systems, Axios said. Lehane called them speed limits that keep people in control.
OpenAI will also push harder in Congress for these ideas, the report said.
A new name for data centres
OpenAI wants its data centres called AI compute campuses, Axios reported. Data centres are big buildings full of computers that run AI.
Many towns have pushed back against new data centres. OpenAI plans to offer deals that give local people a say and a share of the benefits.
Jobs and world rules
OpenAI will also share ideas to train workers and help people start businesses, Axios said. It wants the US to shape world rules for AI.
Below we break down the dates
The vote is on the 3rd of November and Congress returns six days later. New members are sworn in on the 3rd of January, Axios said.
That leaves about eight weeks for the first push, by our arithmetic.
