Vercel's agent-desktop: AI agents on 3 OSes
Vercel Labs released agent-desktop on the 31st of October 2026, a free tool that lets coding agents run desktop apps on macOS, Windows and Linux. It works in the background through the system's accessibility tree.

Vercel Labs' agent-desktopVercel Labs has released agent-desktop, a free tool for AI coding agents to use desktop apps on macOS, Windows and Linux. Chris Tate of Vercel Labs announced it on X on the 31st of October 2026.
The tool is open source under the Apache 2.0 license, its GitHub page says. It installs with npm, the usual installer for JavaScript tools.
Vercel Labs' agent-desktop reads the app's accessibility tree
Computer use means an AI agent clicks and types in apps the way a person does. Vercel Labs' agent-desktop reads the accessibility tree, its README says.
That tree is the list of buttons and fields a system keeps for screen readers.
Each snapshot returns a list with a reference for every element an agent can act on. The agent acts on one reference, then takes a new snapshot to check the result.
Below we break down Tate's claims against the project's own docs
Tate wrote that it gives computer use to any coding agent. The tool has no AI model inside, its docs say: agents call it as a command, and a skill file installs into agent tools.
Tate wrote that it runs in the background while people keep working. Actions are headless by default, the README says, so they run without moving the pointer or taking focus.
Tate wrote that several agents can share one computer, each with its own cursor. The project's concepts guide describes a mode with one drawn cursor per agent on macOS, Windows and Linux X11.
Physical clicks and key presses still run one agent at a time, the same guide says.

The project began with developer lahfir and moved to Vercel Labs on the 30th of October
GitHub shows the repository was created on the 19th of February 2026 by a developer known as lahfir. Notes for version 1.0.2, released on the 30th of October, describe its transfer to Vercel Labs.
Version 1.0.0 came out on the 28th of October, the npm registry shows.
